Introduction To Adobe Premiere Pro __ What is Premiere Pro

What is Premiere Pro

Editing is the process by which different visual and audio elements are sequentially put to- gether to achieve a narrative. Long before computers came, editing meant taking the film, watching the different scenes, physically splicing (cutttng) the shots and i  i•ing them to—

gether. It required machines to watch each frame, see where the transitions could be made

and ensure that the narrative flowed seamlessly as the director had envisioned.

With the introduction of computers, it was no longer needed to physically cut and join tapes. Images were digitized and were stored in different file formats. These images or video could be then be edited using editing software. The editor did not need to go through sequentially to add and cut each shot. At any given point of time one could drop a shot in the middle or remove it. No wonder this was referred to as non-linear editing because though the narrative was linear with one shot succeeding another shot, the freedom and ability was there now to drop and remove a shot without changing what went before and

"It is a non-linear editing software" that we will learn in this manual. While here we will learn Adobe's Premiere Pro, which is tised for editing video, other software also follow the same principles. Once you familiarize yourself with one software, it is not difficult to pick up.other ones because the basics remain the same, even if short cure or some commands might be different.

Other than linear editing and non-linear editing, you may also come across terms likr "online editing and offline editing". When you watch a cricket game, there are a number of cameras placed on the field. At any given point of time, you are seeing only shots from one camera. Since the match and the editing of the shots for final display on your screens is happening simultaneously, it is called online editing. Some news shows on the other hand are edited after shooting the event. Such editing that is done subsequent to the event is called offline editing.

"Premiere is a desktop level non-linear editing software." Various things can br done with Premiere like editing video as well as audio, presentations, compoaiiing, chroma key ti- tling. If you are unfamiliar with any term, there is nothing to be worried about because it will be explained when the use of those devices are explained in later chapters.
